Driver arrested after attacking woman and smashing her luggage at Ho Chi Minh City airport

A motorbike taxi driver who assaulted a female passenger and destroyed her luggage at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport has been arrested.

Police detained 35-year-old Bui Quang Hieu on Monday for investigation on charges of disturbing public order.

They said that his actions caused disorder in a highly populated area, negatively impacted security at the international airport’s gateway, and sparked widespread public outrage.

According to the official police investigation, the altercation unfolded in the early hours of Sunday.

A 39-year-old woman, who had just arrived in the city on a flight from Hanoi, proceeded to Gate No. 2 of Terminal T3 to arrange transportation home.

She approached Hieu to inquire about the fare, but after noticing that he appeared intoxicated, she decided against taking the ride and walked away to wait elsewhere.

Believing the passenger had “booked a ride but refused to go,” Hieu began shouting insults. He then dragged the woman’s luggage into the middle of the road and smashed it. When she protested, he chased and attacked her.

The assault only ended when other drivers and nearby bystanders intervened to stop him. After receiving reports of the incident, police identified Hieu and brought him into custody for questioning.

The case is under further investigation.
