According to Daum, the film is set after the fall of Goguryeo, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, and follows Chilseong (played by Park), a warrior who loses his memory and is forced to fight in a slave arena to obtain a legendary sword.

Thanh will portray In Gwi, the governor of the Tang dynasty’s Protectorate General to Pacify the East, a character who plays a key role in shaping the political landscape in the region.

Footage released Monday from a production meeting showed the Vietnamese star dressed in dark attire, closely following the script and discussing scenes with the crew. Cast members also rehearsed several combat moves to coordinate the film’s action sequences.

According to Star Newsthe role played by Thanh was originally offered to South Korean actor Cha Seung Won. However, after the filming schedule, initially planned for August 2025, was postponed to this year, Cha withdrew from the project.

Thanh said he has been studying three languages to prepare for the role: classical Chinese, Old Turkic and Mongolian.

“I’m honored to be part of a South Korean blockbuster,” he said. “I will do my best not to disappoint movie lovers and the fans who have supported me throughout my two decades in the industry.”

The film, which features actors Jung Jae Young and Lee Sun Bin, is directed by Kim Han Min, known for blockbuster historical films including “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” “Hansan: Rising Dragon” and “Noryang: Deadly Sea.” It is scheduled for release in 2027 and is expected to be distributed in several international markets, including Japan and Vietnam.

Thanh, 39, has achieved notable success as a filmmaker in recent years. In 2021 he gained widespread attention with his debut feature “Bo Gia” (Dad, I’m Sorry), which won several domestic honors including the Golden Lotus Awards and Golden Kite Awards.

In 2023 he released “Nha Ba Nu” (The House of No Man), which became the highest-grossing Vietnamese film at the domestic box office at the time.

His subsequent films “Mai” (Mai) and “Bo Tu Bao Thu” (The 4 Rascals) also ranked among the top-performing Vietnamese films in their respective release years.

Thanh publicly confirmed his relationship with Vietnam-based South Korean singer Hari Won in February 2016. The couple married in December the same year.
