In a major action, the Food Safety Department in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, has seized and destroyed such food items of Amul brand which had expired and the businessman was preparing to sell them in the market by erasing its date and inserting a new date. The total amount of food items seized and destroyed is said to be 1.5 lakh kilos. The interesting thing is that even though the businessman’s food license had expired, he was still doing food business.
Under the initiative of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and the direction of Medical Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar, strict action is being taken continuously against adulteration in Rajasthan. Principal Secretary of Medical and Health Department, Gayatri Rathod said that recently a citizen lodged a complaint on 181 helpline that M/s Athlete Distributor in Kho Nagoriyan area of Jaipur is preparing to sell expired Amul brand food items. On this, the department sent the team of CMHO Jaipur, II for inspection on the spot.
12 thousand cartons found with expiry date, date erased from 3000
Rathod said that the team found a huge quantity of cartons of food items in a big warehouse, which included many non-dairy food products like noodles, ketchup, mayonnaise, energy drinks etc. of Amul brand produced by M/s Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union, Gujarat and supplied by M/s Advansys India Pvt. Ltd. About 12 thousand cartons with expiry date were found, out of which the expiry date was erased from the packets kept in 3000 cartons. Thinner, acetone, chemicals and other materials were found on the spot to erase the date. Gagan Ahuja, a businessman of M/s Athlete Distributor firm, was preparing to print a new date on this food item, pack it in 4500 new Amul brand cartons and sell it at huge profits.
The warehouse used to be closed after the arrival of employees, food license was also found expired.
Food Safety Commissioner Dr. T Shubhamangala said that information has been received about illegal sale of food items in this warehouse. Neighbors told that after 10-12 employees entered the warehouse, its main gate remained closed till evening and no one was allowed inside. He told that the food license of M/s Athlete Store had expired.

Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh said that the team was stunned to see such a huge quantity of expired food items. On enquiry, Gagan told that he learned the method of selling expired goods by changing the date on YouTube. Due to suspicion of expired food items being sold to the general public, the team, after taking samples, seized the food items, machines and other items kept in the warehouse and sealed the premises. A ban has been imposed on doing food business till further action is taken.
Materials were destroyed by filling them in 27 trucks, action lasted for 4 days
Expired material has been destroyed as it is harmful to health. Expired products were destroyed at the firm’s expense. In an operation that lasted for four days, this material was loaded in 27 trucks and taken to the landfill. After the action, a notice has been issued to the representatives of both the firms Kiara and Advansys to take further action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. It is noteworthy that the firm deposited the destruction fee in the Municipal Corporation and gave a receipt, on which the representatives of the company reached the spot and confirmed that the expiry date of the expired items of Amul brand has been erased. He told that Gagan Ahuja buys near expiry material from his firm at throwaway prices.
Food Safety Department will file a complaint in the court against the businessman
Officials said that under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, a case has been filed against the firm Athlete Distributor under Section 26 and 27 for storage of expired material and preparing to sell after erasing the expiry date by printing a new date, Section 31 for doing business without a food license, Section 60 for seizing the material for removing it from the spot, Section 55 for not following the guidelines of the Food Safety Officer and for imposing prescribed punishment and fine for violation of the guidelines of the Food Safety Officer. A complaint will be filed. In relation to the supply of food items to a firm without a food license and other irregularities, advance action will be taken under the provisions of the Act by issuing a notice to the manufacturer and marketing firm M/s Kiara District Co-operative Milk Producer Union and the supplier firm M/s Advansys India Private Limited.
