Mumbai: In recent days, the summer heat has intensified in several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, forcing the Meteorological Department (IMD) to increase the alert level from yellow to orange. The soaring mercury is already more than normal this season.
The orange alert has already indicated heatwave-like conditions in Mumbai and adjoining areas, putting significant health risks if staying outdoor for a long time. The alert has covered various parts of the state, including Thane and Palghar, apart from Mumbai. Normally, such kind of hot temperatures are witnessed in the later part of March, but this year, it arrived early.
Maximum temp recorded 35 degrees in Mumbai on Sunday
On Sunday, the maximum temperature in Mumbai was recorded at 35 degrees. According to a senior official at the weather department, the orange alert has been issued due to high temperatures and heat stress risk, urging locals to avoid staying outdoors between noon and afternoon.
The IMD recorded a maximum temperature of close to 38-40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The Meteorologists have suggested that week sea breeze and strong dry winds have prevented cooling in the coastal areas, leading to a heatwave. Such high temperatures are unusual.
High temperature may lead to a high heat-index value
The rising humidity and high temperatures may lead to high heat-index values,, making conditions even hotter than what official figures suggest. Notably, apart from hot weather conditions, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai indicated mixed signals, with some stations reporting poor to severe AQI, though there have been slight improvements.
With hot weather conditions expected to remain for the next 48-72 hours, officials have urged community awareness and adjustments to daily routines. The IMD also said that temperatures may dip in a few days with a shift in wind patterns.
