A new warning has been issued for millions of WhatsApp and Signal users. Users of these two instant messaging platforms, used worldwide, may be at risk of being hacked. Government officials, the military, and some journalists are particularly targeted by hackers. A Dutch security and intelligence firm has issued an alert regarding this global cyber attack.
The Dutch intelligence agency has issued a warning regarding this new cyber attack. Security experts stated in their alert that Russian hackers are currently targeting users. The accounts of many WhatsApp and Signal users have been hacked. Hackers are deceiving users into gaining access to their accounts and then targeting them.
This is how they target them.
The security agency says that hackers lure WhatsApp and Signal users worldwide by chatting with them and then gain access to their accounts using their personal information. These hackers, posing as support staff or trusted individuals, lure users into their trap through chats. They then gain control of their accounts. Additionally, hackers use the linked devices feature in Signal and WhatsApp to link other devices to users' accounts and then infiltrate their chats.
The Dutch intelligence agency says that both WhatsApp and Signal have end-to-end encryption, which allows only the sending and receiving users to read conversations on these apps. This allows hackers to gain control of users' accounts to monitor their communications. Security experts say that if users provide their verification codes to hackers, their accounts can be easily intercepted. Even end-to-end encryption cannot protect users from this.
Advice given to users
Security experts have advised users of both apps to protect themselves from hackers, including not sharing OTPs or verification codes with anyone. They have also been advised to avoid clicking on unknown links and messages. They have also been advised to keep two-factor authentication enabled in the apps to restrict account access. Furthermore, they have been advised to change their passwords if they notice any suspicious activity on their accounts.
