On Tuesday, Bombay High Court issued an important order regarding the protection of personality rights of actress Shilpa Shetty. In the official statement issued by the actress’s team, it was said that the court has banned using her name, picture, voice, identity or personality without permission or misrepresenting her.

Court gave instructions to remove the content

The court also ordered that all the content present on different digital platforms which harms Shilpa Shetty’s image or violates her rights should be immediately removed. The court clearly said that taking commercial advantage or digitally misusing the identity and reputation of any public figure without permission is not legally acceptable.

Strong comment on deepfakes and digital abuse

The court also said in its order that the Internet cannot be allowed to become a den of deepfakes or digital copying. The court held that a celebrity’s name, picture, voice and personality are their important legal property, which cannot be used without their consent. Along with this, the court directed the digital platforms and intermediaries to take expeditious action to remove any content which harms the reputation of any person or is created unfairly through technology.

The petition was filed in November 2025

In fact, in November 2025, Shilpa Shetty had approached the Bombay High Court for the protection of her personality rights. Her lawyer Sana Raees Khan had then said that the misuse of the actress’s name, picture and identity had reached a level where legal intervention was necessary. He had said that Shilpa Shetty’s public image is built on decades of hard work, discipline and trust, hence no platform can be allowed to use her identity for covert commercial gains.

Many celebs have raised this issue

In recent times, many Bollywood celebrities have approached the court to protect their personality rights. These include names like Karan Johar, Anil Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan. All of them have taken legal action against the misuse of their identity and image on digital platforms.
