Importance of egg freezing
New Delhi: Many women these days are planning to experience motherhood in the future, but the right time is different for everyone. Sometimes it is not possible to become a mother immediately due to not finding the right partner, focusing on career, fulfilling other goals in life or due to some health problem. In such a situation, egg freezing, i.e. preserving the eggs for future, emerges as an option.
Egg Freezing Process
Egg freezing is called cryopreservation in medical language. In this process, using a special technique, the woman’s eggs are extracted and frozen, so that pregnancy can later be achieved through IVF. This method may also be beneficial for women who are undergoing chemotherapy, treatment for severe endometriosis, gender-affirming surgery, or any disease that may affect fertility.
Which women can undergo egg freezing?
According to a report by the Health Information Organization, egg freezing is not necessary or beneficial for every woman. Doctors consider several factors to the woman’s age, health, and fertility. For example, if a woman has cancer, it is important to decide whether the time is right for the egg freezing procedure before starting treatment.
However, in most cases the most important factor is the woman’s age. With increasing age, both the number and quality of eggs decrease. Women usually experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, after which ovulation stops.
expert opinion
According to experts, after the age of 37, the number of eggs starts decreasing rapidly and by the age of 43, about 90 percent of the eggs are no longer suitable for pregnancy. Therefore, it is considered more advisable to get egg freezing done before the age of 40.
Egg Freezing Cost in India
According to reports, the cost of egg freezing in India may vary by city and clinic. Typically, the process of retrieving and freezing the eggs can cost Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh. Additionally, a fee of around Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 is charged every year for storing the eggs.
Egg freezing period
According to the report, modern technology allows the eggs to be preserved for a long time. Many experts believe that properly frozen eggs can be stored for many years, and some countries are discussing allowing them to be stored for up to 55 years. Scientists have also succeeded in cases where pregnancy has been possible with eggs frozen for 10 to 14 years.
