Almost a decade later, when one of the most dramatic endings in T20 World Cup history occurred, the former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Revived painful memories of his team’s heart-breaking defeat against India in the 2016 tournament. During a recent appearance on the Simply Said podcast, the experienced all-rounder revealed that the narrow defeat in Bengaluru is still fresh in his mind.

The match was played on 23 March 2016 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which India won by one run against Bangladesh. For Bangladesh players, especially Mahmudullah, the defeat became an intensely emotional experience that taught them lasting lessons about handling pressure at the highest level.

The dramatic final over that changed everything

Bangladesh looked to be in complete control in the final moments of the match. Chasing a modest target of 147, they needed only 11 runs from the final over, which was bowled by young Hardik Pandya.

The calculations soon tilted in favor of Bangladesh. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim hit consecutive boundaries on the second and third deliveries, leaving Bangladesh needing only two runs from three balls, despite having two well-positioned batsmen at the crease – Rahim and Mahmudullah.

But what happened next became one of the most incredible turnarounds in cricket history.

Pandya attacked on the fourth delivery when Rahim was caught at deep mid-wicket. The pressure was immediately back on Bangladesh. On the next ball, Mahmudullah attempted to finish the game with a big shot, but the ball went straight into the hands of Shikhar Dhawan near the boundary.

Two runs were required off the last ball, and the tension inside the stadium was palpable. New batsman Shuvgata Hom did not approach correctly, and in a dramatic finish, MS Dhoni got a quick run-out of Mustafizur Rahman to ensure a miracle win for India.

Looking back, Mahmudullah admitted that his decision-making process at that crucial moment still haunts him.

“At that particular moment I was thinking that if we just hit a boundary we would win. To be honest, it was stupid,” Mahmudullah accepted.

Now 38 and retired from international cricket, he admitted that a calmer approach could have changed the result.

“I will try to put him in the gap and take two runs,” He told what he would do differently today.

Mahmudullah had also taken responsibility for the defeat immediately after the match in 2016.

“I made a stupid mistake and was responsible for the defeat. I just want to say – I apologize to everyone.”

Tears, regrets and a life-changing lesson

The heartbreak that night extended far beyond the final ball. Mahmudullah recalled that the entire Bangladesh team struggled to accept the defeat after coming so close to defeating India on their home ground.

“I don’t know what happened against India in that game. It was tragic. It was very heartbreaking,” He said.

The emotional fallout was intense, with players crying openly on the field and later in the hotel.

“We cried on the field. When we returned to the hotel, we cried. I, Mushfiqur Rahim, we all cried. Many other members were also crying because we were so close to defeating India.”

For Bangladesh cricket, a win that night would have been historic. Beating India in the World Cup in India would have been a big moment for the team. Instead, the defeat ultimately knocked them out of the group stage, while India reached the semi-finals.

Despite the traumatic experience, Mahmudullah believes it shaped him as both a player and a person.

“I think it was a big lesson in my life. I made a terrible mistake. Whenever I think about it, it burns me. But I think I learned from that mistake. I once heard that ‘you burn, you learn.’ So, I got burnt that day,” he said in a 2020 interview.

In his latest reflection, he described the defeat as a turning point in his life.

“Personally, it was a very life-changing lesson for me in my life. You pull it out till the last ball and finish it,” He said.

This match remains one of the most prestigious matches between India and Bangladesh. India had scored 145 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, with contributions from Suresh Raina and Dhoni, but this total looked low on a good batting surface.
