LinkedIn: The professional networking platform LinkedIn has announced several new changes aimed at improving its feed experience. These changes include initiatives such as an AI-based feed ranking system, stricter enforcement against automated comments, and a reduction in the visibility of posts deemed low-quality or created solely to boost engagement. The company states that the objective of these updates is to surface more useful and relevant content for users, while simultaneously making conversations on the platform more authentic and trustworthy.

AI to Determine Which Posts You See

LinkedIn has introduced a new AI-based ranking system for its feed. This system utilizes Generative AI models and Large Language Models (LLMs) to enable the platform to better understand the subject matter of a post and the specific types of content in which a user is interested.

This system will analyze various signals to determine which specific posts should be displayed to a particular user. For instance, information provided in a user’s profile—such as their industry, professional experience, skills, and location—will be taken into account.

Additionally, the system will observe which posts a user interacts with (reacts to) and which ones they choose to ignore. Based on all this data, the feed will dynamically adapt over time to align with the user’s evolving interests.

Strict Action Against Automated Comments

LinkedIn has also taken steps to curb the rising prevalence of inauthentic engagement on the platform. The company is now cracking down on tools and browser extensions designed to automatically generate comments and artificially inflate engagement on posts. According to the company, the use of such automated commenting tools violates the platform’s terms of service. Consequently, the system is being fortified to detect and mitigate such activities, thereby ensuring that conversations remain genuine and authentic.

Engagement-Bait Posts to Be Downranked

LinkedIn has further announced that, going forward, it will limit the reach of posts created solely for the purpose of soliciting likes, comments, or shares. For instance, this includes posts that prompt users to comment—such as asking them to type “Yes” if they agree—or those that feature unrelated videos solely to boost reach. Similarly, posts that repeatedly share identical ideas may also be displayed less frequently. The company states that priority will now be given to posts containing industry-specific insights, professional advice, or useful workplace discussions.

An Enhanced Experience for New Users

LinkedIn has also introduced a new feature designed to enhance the experience for new users. Typically, the platform relies on a user’s past activity and profile data to customize their feed; however, new users possess limited information of this kind during their initial stages. Consequently, an “Interest Picker” feature is currently being tested during the sign-up process, allowing users to select topics of their choice—such as leadership, job search skills, or career growth.
