The United States Department of Defense is enhancing its military presence in the Middle East by sending more Marines and naval vessels as Iran escalates its attacks near the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by three US officials. According to these officials, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has sanctioned a request from US Central Command to deploy part of an amphibious ready group along with its Marine expeditionary unit to the area. Typically, such deployments consist of multiple warships and approximately 5,000 Marines.
Two officials confirmed that the USS Tripoli (LHA-7), an amphibious assault ship stationed in Japan, along with its Marine contingent, is currently en route to the Middle East. Additional Marines are already present in the region, assisting with operations related to the ongoing conflict with Iran. This military buildup coincides with a series of Iranian-linked attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, which have significantly disrupted shipping routes, impacting global energy markets and driving up fuel prices. This evolving situation poses a substantial military and political challenge for the Trump administration.
