Labour has been slammed after new analysis shows a significant number of new builds will be needed to house migrants. Nearly four in ten new homes built by 2030 will be required for migrants, according to research from the Conservative Party, with warnings this could put additional pressure on the housing market.
It comes as the Government continues to lag behind its ambitious house-building plans. Building 1.5 million new homes across England by 2029 was a key pledge in Labour's manifesto, however industry experts have warned it will be impossible to achieve. The new analysis is reportedly based on data from the Office for Budget Responsibility's latest Economic and Fiscal Outlook.
The watchdog's figures show net migration between 2026 and 2030 is expected to stand at 1,172,792.
Using the ONS' average household size, this would require around 499,000 additional homes based on migration alone, according to The Sun which broke the story.
Over the same period, around 1.34 million new homes are expected to be built in Britain, meaning 37.1% of all homes built in the next five years would go towards housing immigrants, climbing to 39.1% by 2030, The Sun reported.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told the newspaper: "High immigration has real consequences for rents, house prices and who gets access to new homes.
"Labour has opened the door without any plan to deal with the consequences."
Migration pressures alone could reportedly see nearly £9,500 added to the price of an average home.
A Government spokesperson said: "We are pulling every lever to build 1.5 million homes, restore the dream of homeownership and end the housing crisis we inherited.
"This is alongside the biggest overhaul of Britain's settlement model in 50 years, to tackle the unacceptably high levels of net migration in recent years which under this government, is down by nearly 70%."
