Chelsea player ratings vs Newcastle – James verdict, Chalobah punished, 3/10 disappoints
Football | March 15, 2026 6:39 AM CST

Anthony Gordon fired Newcastle United to a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening. The Blues could now fall out of the Premier League top four if Liverpool manage to snatch at least a point from Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies forward broke the deadlock inside the opening half an hour, passing the ball into an open net after Newcastle caught Chelsea outnumbered at the back. The west Londoners parted like the Red Sea, with Tino Livramento finding Joe Willock, who squared it at the final moment.

Chelsea began the second half in the ascendancy, enjoying the lion's share of possession. Although the Club World Cup winners created lots of chances, many of which were tame, they eventually took their foot off the pedal and looked devoid of any ideas.

Starting Lineup

Robert Sanchez – 5

Sanchez couldn't have done anything about the opener; the Chelsea backline left him out to dry as Willock raced behind Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah before squaring it to Gordon. The Blues goalkeeper did, at least, make a couple of saves in the first half and he was comfortable in possession.

Malo Gusto – 5

Gusto enjoyed a couple of bright moments in the first half, but he failed to answer any of Chelsea's problems. The Blues defender was replaced by Liam Delap at the break.

Wesley Fofana – 5

Fofana didn't do himself any favours when he picked up an early booking.

Trevoh Chalobah – 5

Chalobah was caught out of position for the opener, allowing Tino Livramento to carve open the Chelsea backline.

Marc Cucurella – 4

Cucurella had a nervy start to the game, losing possession with a loose pass. The Blues defender, who picked up a needless booking in stoppage time, didn't have much of an impact down the left.

Moises Caicedo – 5

Caicedo did well in the opening quarter of an hour, making a couple of good tackles in and around the Chelsea box. The Blues midfielder was unfortunate to pick up a booking midway through the first half; he was penalised for a tackle, which he won the ball, on Nick Woltemade.

Reece James – 6

James was thrown under the spotlight when he was alleged to have fouled Malick Thiaw inside the box towards the end of the first half, but the Video Assistant Referee cleared the Chelsea captain of any wrongdoing. Otherwise, he had a fairly quiet opening 45 minutes, like many of his teammates.

He was as reliable as ever in the second half, creating a great chance just after the quarter of an hour mark. Chalobah latched onto a very good looping cross by James, but he headed wide from close range.

Cole Palmer – 5

Palmer had a couple of chances to get Chelsea on the scoreboard, but he failed to test Ramsdale.

Enzo Fernandez – 5

Fernandez kept it ticking throughout the clash, before playing his first defence-unlocking pass in the second half. The Chelsea midfielder threaded Delap in-behind, whose shot was blocked.

Alejandro Garnacho – 5

Garnacho didn't really spring to life until the early stages of the second half. Before the break, the Chelsea winger had a couple of shots and delivered a few crosses but he couldn't unlock the Newcastle defence.

Joao Pedro – 6

Pedro enjoyed a bright start to the game, holding the ball up well and bringing teammates into play. That said, it didn't count for much, with the Chelsea striker rarely given the chance to test Aaron Ramsdale.

He picked up from where he left off after the break, showcasing a few nice touches and turns, but didn't have much success in the box.

Substitutes

Liam Delap – 5

Delap wasn't afraid to throw his weight around in the early moments of the second half, injecting some much-needed intensity into Rosenior's side. The Chelsea striker stretched the Magpies' defence, but his first big chance didn't fall to him until the 75th minute; he smashed it over.

Romeo Lavia – 5

Lavia was comfortable in possession and kept it ticking, but he hardly set the world alight.

Jorrel Hato – 5

With Newcastle happy to soak up the pressure and sit deep, Hato didn't have much to do. That said, he certainly displayed his recovery pace. The Chelsea defender eats up ground for fun.

The Chelsea starting lineup: Robert Sanchez; Malo Gusto (45' Liam Delap), Wesley Fofana (82' Jorrel Hato), Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Cucurella; Reece James, Moises Caicedo (61' Romeo Lavia); Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, Alejandro Garnacho; Joao Pedro.
