Guwahati, March 15: The recent inauguration of the Maharaj Prithu Flyover has not provided the anticipated relief from traffic jams, as long lines of vehicles were observed near the Chandmari roundabout on Saturday.

Constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 852 crore, this flyover is the longest in the Northeast. It was officially opened by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 10 and was initially designated as a pedestrian zone for three days before allowing vehicular traffic.

However, commuters faced significant delays, especially during the evening rush hour. The Chandmari roundabout became a critical choke point, causing traffic to back up onto the flyover.

Many travelers expressed disappointment, noting that the situation seemed unchanged despite the new infrastructure. One commuter remarked, “We expected the flyover to ease traffic and allow quicker passage, but the congestion at Chandmari remains the same.”

Another driver highlighted the confusion at the roundabout, stating, “Vehicles from various directions converge at this point, which hampers traffic flow.”

Two police officers were observed attempting to manage the traffic at the junction, but congestion persisted during peak hours.

Interestingly, some commuters noted that the road beneath the flyover appeared less congested than the elevated section. “Using the road below is actually more convenient due to the lower traffic volume,” one traveler commented.

Authorities have been urged to reassess the traffic management strategies around the Chandmari roundabout to ensure the flyover can effectively alleviate congestion in the area.
