Rooster's Impressive Debut

Since its international launch on March 8, Rooster has quickly risen to become HBO’s most popular American comedy in the last ten years, attracting 2.4 million viewers. This success is largely attributed to the exceptional talent both in front of and behind the camera. Co-created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, the series features Steve Carell in the lead role, alongside a talented cast that includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, Charly Clive, Lauren Tsai, and John C. McGinley. Lawrence, known for his work on hit shows like Spin City, Scrubs, Ted Lasso, and Shrinking, shared insights into his casting choices, emphasizing the importance of collaborating with familiar faces.

During a press event prior to the show's release, Lawrence, who boasts decades of industry experience, discussed the challenges of modern television. Unlike the past, where shows had 26 episodes a year to develop cast chemistry, streaming platforms require immediate connection. He elaborated on his preference for working with actors he has previously collaborated with, stating, “I’ve worked with John C. McGinley on Scrubs. I’ve worked with Phil [Dunster] on Ted Lasso. Connie Britton and Alan Ruck were both in Spin City. For me, the gift of what doing what we do is if you’re lucky enough to get to make something and there’s people that are incredibly talented whose voices you know in your head, you might be able to skip some steps. There are people that you want to spend time with in real life anyway. I think you’re insane not to do it. I think part of the chemistry of Rooster is building authenticity in relationships fast. Matt was nice enough to let me cast some people from my old world, as well as be the driving force in finding new people on the show.

Co-Creator's Perspective

Co-creator Matt Tarses added, “It was great to cast these people who we knew were great actors, as long as we were careful to make them different than the characters they had played before.”

More about the series Rooster

In the HBO series, Steve Carell portrays author Greg Russo, who pens a series of beloved novels centered around a character named Rooster. He visits Ludlow College to support his daughter Katie (Charly Clive), who is facing difficulties in her marriage. While Greg aims to provide assistance, he inadvertently becomes entangled in her complex life and develops new relationships of his own.

The ten-episode series will be released weekly, with the finale scheduled for May 11. The inaugural episode of Rooster is currently available for streaming on JioHotstar.
