Gulveer Singh sets new national half marathon mark

New Delhi: Gulveer Singh finished third at New York Half Marathon on Sunday and in the process broke the national men’s record over the 21.1km distance.

The 27-year-old registered a timing of 59 minutes 42 seconds to overtake the previous mark of 1:00:30 from steeplechase specialist Avinash Sable at the 2020 Delhi Half Marathon.

Gulveer finished behind South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt, who finished at the top of the podium after clocking 59:30, while American long-distance runner Zouhair Talbi was second at 59:41.

Indian Army employee Gulveer is the first Indian distance runner to hold multiple national records, holding the 3,000m on the track to the 25km road race as well as men’s 5,000m and 10,000m on the track.

A medallist in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games, he won the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

Gulveer now aims for a podium finish at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in September.

“I’m fit and looking forward to good results in upcoming major international races,” said Gulveer, who is currently based in USA’s Colorado Springs.

Selva Prabhu clinches silver

at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, USA, Selva Prabhu registered a personal best effort to claim the silver medal in the men’s triple jump event.

Prabhu, a silver medallist at the 2022 World Athletics U-20 Championships, produced a best jump of 17.05m to breach the 17m barrier for the first time.

The 21-year old, who is also the U-20 national record holder, is currently studying in the Kansas State University, also set a national Indoor record, though it is yet to be ratified by the Athletics Federation of India.
