New Cyber Fraud Linked to LPG Booking

Amid reports of LPG cylinder shortages in several parts of the country, cybercriminals have started targeting consumers with a new type of scam. Fraudsters are sending fake calls, messages, and links in the name of gas agencies to trick people into sharing sensitive information or making online payments.

Taking note of the growing incidents, Delhi Police has issued a public alert, urging citizens to stay cautious and avoid clicking on suspicious links related to LPG bookings.

What Is the LPG Booking Scam?

With increasing demand and concerns about LPG supply, scammers are exploiting the situation to mislead consumers. Fraudsters pretend to be representatives from gas agencies and send messages claiming that urgent action is required to secure an LPG cylinder booking.

Victims are often told that if they do not register immediately or click a link, their gas booking may be cancelled or they may lose their chance to receive a cylinder.

In many cases, these messages direct users to fake websites or apps, where they are asked to make payments or provide personal details.

How This Cyber Fraud Works

Cybercriminals use several tactics to trap victims:

• Sending fake calls or SMS messages in the name of gas agencies

• Offering “priority cylinder booking” or “emergency delivery”

• Sharing fraudulent links via WhatsApp or SMS

• Asking users to download APK files, which install malware on the device

Once the victim clicks the link or installs the app, hackers may gain access to sensitive data such as bank details, passwords, and OTPs, allowing them to withdraw money from the victim’s account.

Safety Tips to Avoid LPG Booking Scams

Delhi Police has shared several precautions to protect people from such cyber fraud:

• Do not click on unknown or suspicious links.

• Always book LPG cylinders through the official website or mobile app of the gas agency.

• Never share OTP, UPI PIN, or bank details with anyone over phone calls or messages.

• Avoid falling for urgent booking offers or emergency delivery claims.

• Verify any LPG-related offers circulating on social media before acting.

What To Do If You Receive a Suspicious Call or Message

If you receive any suspicious message, call, or link claiming to be from a gas agency, ignore it immediately and do not interact with it.

In case you become a victim of such fraud, report the incident as soon as possible by:

• Filing a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in

Reporting the fraud quickly increases the chances of recovering lost money.
