Buffy the Vampire Slayer's eagerly awaited revival has officially been axed and enthusiasts have been left heartbroken.
The beloved series created by Joss Whedon and based on the 1992 film of the same name starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as teenage vampire hunter Buffy Summers and garnered a massive cult following throughout its original 1997-2002 run.
Also featuring Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, and Nicholas Brendon, the seven-season fantasy drama chronicled a group of high school students combating world-ending supernatural threats whilst navigating their complex personal drama.
Enthusiasts were delighted when a reboot of the series was announced last year, with the Oscar-winning director of Hamnet, Chloé Zhao, set to helm the pilot episode.
Regrettably, just hours after teasing the revival, which was titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, in an interview with Comicbook.com, Gellar took to Instagram this Saturday (14th March) to confirm that it had been scrapped, reports the Mirror.
In a video posted to her Instagram account, she told fans: "I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me.
"Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale."
The series was being developed by writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and would have featured Gellar returning as Buffy in a supporting role alongside a new Slayer. In July 2025, Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso and Jack Cutmore-Scott were announced as regulars, with additional cast members including The Studio's Chase Sui Wonders confirmed the following month.
Gellar went on in the post: "I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish, yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé , I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn't change any of that."
The actress evidently isn't dismissing the prospect of resurrecting the franchise elsewhere, as she concluded: "I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me."
However, Buffy devotees were left devastated by Gellar's revelation as they flocked to the comments to express their dismay.
"This is heartbreaking," one individual responded, and another raged: "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!"
Someone else declared: "BIG MISTAKE @hulu YOU WILL REGRET THIS. THE WORLD IS NOT WELL."
Another supporter accused the streaming platform of an error, stating: "This is so Sad!!! @hulu are you out of your mind?"
And a final viewer confessed: "Not being dramatic but this has absolutely ruined my year. I'm already mid rewatch in anticipation."
All seven series of the original television sensation are currently available to stream on Disney+ but it appears that, for the moment, the next instalment of Buffy's story will remain unwritten.
