Firefly enthusiasts are celebrating as Nathan Fillion has confirmed a revival is finally underway - though not the one they might have anticipated.

The actor, renowned for his role as the captain of the starship Serenity in the 26th Century-set sci-fi Western drama, has verified that an animated series based on the cancelled 2002 show is currently being developed.

Fillion made the announcement at the Awesome Con event in Washington DC this weekend, alongside his co-stars Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau, who are all expected to reprise their roles.

The star's own production company, Collision33, will develop the series, with husband-and-wife writing duo Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Dollhouse) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Flash) serving as showrunners in their first professional partnership.

A script for the animated sequel has already been penned and is set between the original 11 episodes aired in 2002 and the film Serenity, released in 2025, reports the Mirror.

Fillion took to Instagram to share the thrilling news with his followers, revealing he has received the blessing from Firefly's creator Joss Whedon, who is not involved in the revival.

He also told Deadline: "The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant.

"Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it's something they deserve."

A Firefly reboot has been over two decades in the making. Despite cultivating a devoted fanbase and frequently regarded as one of the finest series of the 21st Century, it was axed by Fox after just one season.

One enthusiastic IMDb review described Firefly as "one of the best TV Series ever made", adding: "The casting is perfect. The writing is imaginative, witty, and it explores the nobility and fallibility of humanity. It gave us beloved characters with depth and relationships for which we rooted.

"The production values were ahead of its time. The music was perfect. And, that perfect cast gave perfect performances. Pretty high praise for a 14 episode, one season series, released incomplete and out of order by the network.

"This is possibly one of the best series ever, and certainly is among the best science fiction series or movies ever made," someone else concurred.

"Truly one of the greatest," another admirer wrote. "This is one of the absolute best sci-fi shows ever created and got the royal screw treatment by Fox.

"This had so much unused potential it kills me that it only got 1 short season. Still though, it was an amazing season and one of my favorite shows ever."

And a final enthusiast declared: "Simply put, this is the greatest show ever made about space cowboys....or anything else.....ever!!"

UK viewers are fortunate as the original Firefly is currently available to stream ahead of the animated revival arriving at a later date.
