Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has called time on his cricket career across all formats. The wicketkeeper-batter, who famously led Pakistan to victories over India in two ICC tournament finals, shared the decision through a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday.

The wicketkeeper-batter’s last appearance for Pakistan came in the Perth Test versus Australia in December 2023. With his retirement now confirmed, reports indicate the PCB may name him permanent head coach of the Test side.

The red-ball head coach post has been vacant since Azhar Mahmood’s departure.

In addition to his playing career, Sarfaraz has recently stepped into administrative roles, becoming part of the national selection panel and working as mentor and manager for the U-19 and Shaheens teams.

Although he played a first-class match in October last year, Sarfaraz said he now wants to focus fully on his new roles in Pakistan cricket.

“Leading Pakistan in all three formats was something I never imagined. Winning the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2006 and the Champions Trophy in 2017 are memories I will always cherish,” he said.

Reflecting on his career, Sarfaraz stated that he always tried to promote fearless cricket.

The Karachi-born cricketer represented Pakistan in 54 Tests, 117 One-Day Internationals and 61 T20 Internationals, and he also captained the national side in 100 international matches across formats.
