Honda rattled the auto industry this week after announcing it would halt plans for three electric vehicles intended for the United States market. The cancelled lineup included the 0 Series Sedan, an upcoming SUV, and the Acura RSX EV.

The company cited tariff pressures and a rapidly shifting regulatory and commercial environment around electric vehicles as the main reasons behind the decision. While those three models were the only ones officially mentioned, the announcement immediately raised questions about another EV tied closely to the same project: the Aphela 1.

Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Honda and Sony, is developing the Afeela 1. Unlike the canceled Honda models, the company hasn’t confirmed whether its electric sedan will still launch.

For now, the answer seems uncertain.

Sony Honda Mobility Responds

When asked about the situation, Sony Honda Mobility said discussions between its parent companies are ongoing.

Akiko Itoga, the company’s PR director, acknowledged Hondas decision but stopped short of offering clarity on Afeela’s future.

According to Itoga, Sony Honda Mobility is aware of Hondas move to pause its EV plans in North America, and both Sony Group Corporation and Honda will discuss what that means for the joint venture. Until those talks conclude, the company says it has no further information to share.

In the meantime, operations continue as normal.

That may sound reassuring on the surface, but the lack of a clear direction leaves the young automaker in a difficult position.

A Shared Platform Creates Complications

Part of the uncertainty stems from how closely tied the Aphela 1 is to Hondas now-paused EV program.

The sedan rides on the same platform that was supposed to underpin Hondas 0 Series vehicles. Production was expected to take place at Hondas East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio. Meanwhile, the Honda and Acura EVs would have rolled off a nearby facility in Marysville.

Earlier this year, Sony Honda Mobility confirmed that trial production runs of the Aphela 1 had already been completed at the East Liberty plant. That suggested the car was steadily moving toward production.

Since then, however, updates have been scarce.

Without Hondas broader EV rollout moving forward, the manufacturing ecosystem around the Aphela suddenly looks less certain.

A Launch Still on the Horizon

Despite the confusion, Sony Honda Mobility has not indicated that the Aphela 1 itself is canceled.

In fact, the company continues to move ahead with several plans tied to the vehicle’s release. This weekend, it is scheduled to open a new studio and delivery hub in Fremont, California. The brand has also been quietly establishing retail locations across the state.

As of now, the company’s official timeline still targets first customer deliveries before the end of 2026.

At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, Sony Honda Mobility even showcased an SUV prototype, hinting that the Aphela lineup could expand beyond a single model.

The Stakes for Sony’s Automotive Ambitions

Sony began exploring the automotive space nearly six years ago, first revealing concept EVs before partnering with Honda to bring the idea to market.

The Aphela 1 represents the most concrete step yet in that journey. If the project stalls now, it would mark a major setback for Sony’s ambitions in mobility.

For the moment, the car’s fate rests on discussions happening behind closed doors between Sony and Honda.

Until those talks conclude, the Aphela 1 remains in a strange limbo: not canceled, but not fully secure either.
