Avengers reunion at Oscars 2026: The 98th Academy Awards delivered an unexpected dose of Marvel nostalgia when Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans reunited on stage, delighting fans with humour and a cheeky surprise. The two stars, who famously played Iron Man and Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appeared together at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to present the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay.

During the ceremony, Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Adapted Screenplay for One Battle After Another, while Ryan Coogler took home Best Original Screenplay for Sinners.

Before announcing the winners, the actors shared a nostalgic moment on stage, reflecting on the 14th anniversary of the original The Avengers. Their friendly banter quickly turned into one of the night’s most talked-about highlights.

Evans kicked off the exchange with a playful question: “What’d you get me for our anniversary?” Downey Jr., keeping the audience guessing, responded teasingly, “Dude, hold on.” Evans revealed that he had brought a thoughtful gift backstage, a signed copy of the original Avengers script from the entire cast. Downey Jr., however, leaned fully into the comedy. At first, he offered what appeared to be a valet parking ticket.

“You self-drove?” Evans joked. Downey Jr. fired back instantly: “I did, I’m a man of the people.” Just when the crowd thought the bit had ended, Downey Jr. returned to the stage moments later with a gag gift. Handing it to Evans, he announced that it was “the official tanning shadeam thong from Magic Mike.” The unexpected reveal triggered laughter throughout the theatre.

From the audience, actor Channing Tatum joined the fun, joking that he might need the item back.

Upcoming movies in the MCU

Speaking more about the MCU, Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31. Meanwhile, the franchise’s next major crossover, Avengers: Doomsday, will arrive in theatres on December 18.

The film promises another major Marvel reunion. Downey Jr., who originally played Tony Stark, is expected to return in a new role as Doctor Doom, while Evans will reprise Steve Rogers after retiring the character in Avengers: Endgame.
