This moment follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing Harish Rana to die with dignity. Following the court's decision on March 11, Harish was transferred to the palliative care unit at AIIMS, where a medical board will plan for his end-of-life care. Although doctors agreed on his dire condition, the Supreme Court clarified that removing the ventilator, along with feeding and medical tubes, could legally be considered 'passive euthanasia.'

The historic ruling was delivered by Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Vishwanathan, allowing the family to remove life support systems in the hospital, enabling Harish to pass away with dignity. Harish, a student of engineering at Punjab University, suffered head injuries after falling from the fourth floor of his paying guest accommodation in 2013 and has been in a coma since then.
