Jorhat, Mar 16: Local residents are expressing frustration regarding the sluggish progress of development initiatives in the newly established Teok constituency. They point out that a crucial 950-meter road linking Jorhat and Malou Ali has been left unfinished for almost three years.
This road, situated approximately 2 kilometers from Jorhat town, serves as a vital connection for commuters from the northwestern regions of the district seeking access to the town.
Despite its importance, community members argue that construction has been exceedingly slow, with significant portions still incomplete.
“This road is of utmost importance, yet it has taken three years to remain unfinished. Nearly 30% of the 950-meter stretch is still not done. The relevant department and minister have not given this road the attention it deserves,” stated Biswajit Saikia, a representative of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).
Residents have noted that the road's poor condition, especially during the rainy season, transforms it into a muddy path, complicating and endangering travel.
Both pedestrians and vehicles struggle to navigate through deep mud and potholes, leading to significant inconvenience and safety issues. Locals have reported several minor accidents occurring due to the road's deteriorating state.
“With the announcement of the State Assembly election dates yesterday, the residents here will express their dissatisfaction through the 2026 elections,” Saikia remarked.
He also mentioned that during Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's visit on December 12, 2024, some temporary repairs were made overnight.
“However, after that, the road returned to its dilapidated state, and the work remains unfinished,” he added.
Saikia warned that if the road is not repaired before the elections, the AJYCP, along with local residents, may organize protests leading up to the polls.
Additionally, some residents criticized the local authorities for their inefficiency and highlighted delays in the project's execution.
They also raised concerns about the pace of development under the leadership of Dergaon MLA Bhabendra Nath Bharali.
