6 sixes in 6 balls: One of the most memorable moments in cricket history was when India’s explosive batsman Yuvraj Singh created history by hitting six consecutive sixes in a single over. He did this historic feat against England’s fast bowler Stuart Broad in the T20 World Cup 2007. Yuvraj’s stormy batting in that match had created a sensation in the entire cricket world.
Somewhere this brilliant performance made Yuvraj Singh a distinct identity and a big brand. Even today, when a batsman hits three or more sixes consecutively in one over of a bowler, the first thing that comes to mind of cricket lovers is that historic over of Yuvraj Singh. However, Yuvraj was not the first player to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket. This amazing record had been made even before him.
Hershel Gibbs was the first to do this feat
The first batsman to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket was Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa. He achieved this historic feat during the ICC ODI World Cup on 15 March 2007.
In the match played in St. Kitts, West Indies, Gibbs hit sixes on all the six balls of one over of Netherlands leg spinner Daan van Bunge. The special thing was that this feat happened on a big stage like the World Cup, which made it even more special.
In the same year Yuvraj also repeated his feat
After Gibbs, in the same year, India’s Yuvraj Singh made this record against England in the T20 World Cup (September 19, 2007). His six sixes in Broad’s over not only changed the course of the match but also made T20 cricket more popular across the world.
Yuvraj not only hit sixes in that over, but also scored the fastest fifty in T20 history by completing his half-century in 12 balls at a strike rate of 362.5. In that match, the veteran all-rounder played an innings of 58 runs in 16 balls, in which he hit a total of 7 sixes and 3 fours.
Even before Yuvraj Singh, the record of hitting six sixes in an over had been made in international cricket and even after him, some batsmen achieved this feat. However, Yuvraj’s historical record of scoring the fastest half-century and hitting six sixes in a single over in the T20 World Cup still stands and no player has been able to break it.
This record was made in later years also
After 2007, no batsman could repeat this record for many years. But later some players achieved this rare feat.
In 2021, West Indies’ Kieron Pollard hit six sixes in an over in a T20 international match against Sri Lanka. In the same year, America’s Jaskaran Malhotra also achieved this feat in an ODI match against Papua New Guinea.
In recent years, Nepal’s Deependra Singh Airi also made a place in this exclusive club by hitting six consecutive sixes in T20 International in 2024.

Very rare achievement in cricket
Hitting six sixes in an over is considered one of the most difficult and rare achievements in cricket. For this, the batsman not only needs excellent timing and strength, but also has to handle mental pressure.
This is the reason why in the more than a century long history of international cricket, till now only five batsmen have been able to accomplish this feat. That 2007 over of Yuvraj Singh still remains a memorable moment for cricket lovers.
