Keeping vegetables fresh during the summer season often becomes a big challenge. Due to extreme heat and humidity, green vegetables start withering or getting spoiled quickly. Many times it happens that fresh vegetables start losing their freshness just after a day or two of bringing them from the market. In such a situation, people have to go to the market again and again and due to improper storage of vegetables, they suffer a lot of loss. Actually, to keep vegetables fresh for a long time, it is very important to store them properly.
If vegetables are kept at the right temperature and in the right way, their freshness can remain for many days. If you also want that your purchased vegetables do not spoil quickly and remain fresh for a long time, then it is very important to know the correct methods of their storage. Let us know about it in detail.
use the fridge properly
Most green vegetables should be kept in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. This place maintains the right moisture and temperature for the vegetables, so that they do not spoil quickly.
Do not wash, keep dry
Many people wash vegetables as soon as they buy them and keep them in the refrigerator. By doing this, there is more moisture in them and they start rotting quickly. Keep vegetables without washing them. Wash only before use.
wrap in paper or cloth
Wrap green leafy vegetables (like spinach, coriander, fenugreek) in a paper towel or dry cloth and then keep them in a box or polythene. Due to this, excess moisture is absorbed and the vegetables remain fresh for a longer time.
keep different vegetables separate
Some fruits and vegetables release ethylene gas (e.g. tomato, banana). This gas can quickly cook nearby vegetables and spoil them. Therefore, it is better to keep them separate from other vegetables.
keep stalked vegetables in water
Vegetables like coriander, mint or green onion can be kept in a glass by filling it with some water and immersing the stalk in it. Then cover it with light plastic on top. Due to this they remain fresh for a longer time.
buy as per need
Buying too many vegetables at once during the summer season can spoil them. Therefore, try to buy vegetables only for 3-4 days.
