Chris Nanos, the Sheriff of Pima County, is encountering increasing scrutiny as a recall initiative has been initiated due to his management of the Nancy Guthrie case. The 84-year-old Guthrie was reported missing on February 1, with authorities suspecting she was taken from her home in Catalina Foothills, Arizona, the previous night. The investigation is being led by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, with support from the FBI. However, Nanos has faced ongoing criticism regarding the handling of this case. According to journalist Mary Coleman from KOLD News, the recall effort was officially filed on March 12. “We’ve confirmed with the Pima County Elections Department that a recall effort has been launched for Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos,” Coleman shared on social media.

In light of the recall initiative, Nanos has recognized the situation and stressed the importance of accountability to the public. “We’re aware of the recall, and it’s the right of the people,” he stated. “We will always honour the will of the people; that’s what makes democracy.” To advance the recall, organizers need to collect 120,000 signatures within a span of 120 days, as noted by Coleman.

Investigation Faces Public Frustration Handling of Case Draws Criticism

Several elements of the investigation have sparked public discontent. A significant point of debate was the choice to send evidence to a private laboratory in Florida rather than utilizing the FBI’s resources. Although Nanos defended this decision, the delays in obtaining forensic results have led to backlash. Additionally, authorities faced criticism for prematurely clearing certain family members of the Guthrie family as suspects before the case was fully resolved.

No Progress in Finding Guthrie No Breakthrough Yet in Disappearance

Over a month has passed since Guthrie went missing, and investigators have yet to identify any suspects or disclose her location. The FBI had previously released a description of a person of interest based on surveillance footage, describing him as a man of average build, standing approximately 5’9” to 5’10”, and carrying a black 25-litre Ozark Trail hiking backpack.

Recent updates indicate that the investigation remains active. NewsNation reporter Brian Entin has reported that FBI agents have returned to the neighborhood where Guthrie lived. They are inquiring about neighbors who relocated shortly before her disappearance and are also investigating a nearby construction site, looking for information about workers who had access to the area.
