Belthangady: A 16-year-old II PU student drowned in the Nethravathi river near Arasamajalu on the Mundaje–Indabettu border on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Nishanth, a resident of Kuloor in Mundaje village. He was a student of a local college and had gone to the river with relatives in the afternoon after completing his II PU examinations.
According to reports, he entered the river for a bath but moved into a deeper area without realising the depth and drowned. Relatives who were present at the spot attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful.
The body, which was trapped at a depth of around 10 feet, was later retrieved by members of the Shri Dharmasthala Shaurya disaster management team along with locals.
A case has been registered at Dharmasthala police station.
Nishanth was originally from Kerala. His family had settled in Mundaje several years ago and worked in rubber tapping in local estates. His father had died by suicide a few years ago, while his mother died in a fire accident. He is survived by his elder sister, who is employed in a private firm.
