Zomato hikes platform fees
Zomato Hikes Platform Fees: The escalating tensions in West Asia are now having an impact on India. While oil companies have increased the price of premium petrol sold in the country by nearly ₹2, online food delivery has also become more expensive. Zomato has increased its platform fee by ₹2.40 per order, which will impose an additional burden on customers.
Zomato gave a blow
With this increase, Zomato's platform fee has risen from ₹12.50 to ₹14.90 per order. The last increase was in September 2025. Meanwhile, rival Swiggy already charges ₹14.99 per order, including taxes. Zomato's new fee brings the charges for both food delivery platforms to almost the same level.
This increase in platform fees comes amid a surge in crude oil prices. Fuel prices increase the cost of delivery operations, impacting both restaurants and delivery partners. Companies are raising fees to offset their costs. This directly impacts customers, as the total bill for each order will now be higher than before, even as competition in the sector continues to grow.
The impact of Middle East tensions
It's worth noting that this new growth in the food delivery sector comes at a time when competition is rapidly changing. Urban mobility startup Rapido recently launched its food delivery service, "Only," in Bengaluru.
The company says it won't charge customers or restaurants any additional fees beyond the delivery fee. Rapido's move could put pressure on existing players, especially at a time when customers are already expressing concerns about the various additional fees levied on food delivery orders.
