Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 300 new electric vehicle (EV) buses from Indraprastha bus depot in the national capital on March 20, 2026. Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra also attended the event; This was an important step towards the Delhi Government’s efforts to promote sustainable public transport.

Gupta announced that with the addition of these new buses, the total number of buses in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet has reached 6,100. “We want to make Delhi’s public transport fleet completely electric,” he told reporters, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve and modernize the city’s infrastructure. He also laid the foundation stone of a new DTC office near IP Depot.

The chief minister launched a new inter-state bus service connecting Delhi with Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, calling it the fifth such route to improve regional connectivity.

Additionally, Gupta also highlighted the distribution of pending EV subsidy of about Rs 24 crore to 12,877 eligible beneficiaries from 2023 till now. “People can register and avail subsidies in a transparent manner on the portal launched by us,” he said, thus promoting accessible incentives for EV adoption.

The flag-off event is in line with the broader ‘green mobility’ agenda of the Gupta-led BJP government, which has repeatedly set the target of a fully electric public transport system. Previous initiatives have significantly expanded the fleet of e-buses, and there are plans to expand further.

On 19 March, Gupta held a consultation with ‘gig workers’ and workers (laborers) to seek suggestions regarding the upcoming state budget; This budget is scheduled to start from March 23, 2026. The discussions addressed challenges such as formal employment status, urban infrastructure for delivery and transportation sectors, and gender-specific needs, including women’s infrastructure. “Their participation is the biggest strength of this budget,” he said, and expressed the aim of creating a people-centric roadmap for a developed Delhi.

These steps underline the government’s special focus on clean energy, connectivity and inclusive governance amid public consultations.
