Woman gets Too Good To Go bag from Pizza Express but contents are unexpected

Food accounts for a big part of most people's monthly spending, so any way we can save a bit of money while still eating well is welcome. There are lots of clever tips to help, including having a look at the reduced aisle, planning meals ahead of time, and keeping an eye out for coupons. Too Good To Go is another handy service, through which customers can get products which would otherwise be thrown away for a fraction of what they would cost normally.

But it's a gamble - while you might end up with a bag full of tasty treats you can't wait to get stuck into, you could just as easily find yourself with a load of stuff you don't want. One woman rolled the dice on a bag from a popular national pizza chain, and the results weren't what she expected at all.

The Essex woman, who has more than 16,000 followers on TikTok, where she posts as raviebabietok, picked up the bag from a branch of Pizza Express. After getting home she opened the bag, which had four containers inside, and opened them one by one.

Speaking in the video, which displayed the caption: "Do you think this is worth 4.95?" she says: "I used 100 per cent of my brain for this. I put a pizza in the oven and they've given us four boxes, so let's see what is inside."

Opening the first box, she laughs before displaying the contents to the camera. "Two garlic butters and a spicy tomato and chili dip," she says. "Ok. So hopefully there's three sides."

Shaking the second box, she says "they sound like dough balls", before opening it. Looking confused, she lifts the box to her nose and gives it a sniff, and says: "I think those are halloumi bites. Very nice."

The third and fourth boxes both contain the same thing - Pizza Express' ever-popular dough balls. "That was £4.95," the woman says. "Is it worth it? I suppose. Pizza Express is quite overpriced anyway, so that's a good price for Pizza Express."

Dipping one of the halloumi bits into the tomato dip, she says: "Very salty. Nice with the dip though."

In the video description the woman wrote: "Not all #toogoodtogo bags are made equal and unfortunately this one sits below Greggs, about on par with Costa in my opinion - Greggs Too Good To Go bags still on top."

Prices vary by location, but Pizza Express' dough balls with garlic butter are usually between around £6.75 and £7.25, while the halloumi bites with Italian tomato dip usually cost around £7.45. At £4.95, the woman's bag was cheaper than it would have been to buy even one of these.

What is Too Good To Go?

Too Good To Go is an app-based service founded in 2016 aimed at reducing food waste. Food businesses such as shops, bakeries, cafes, and restaurants use it to sell bundles of products which would otherwise be thrown away, such as items which have reached their use-by date, at a significantly reduced price.

Customers can view businesses in their area on the app and reserve and pay for bags before collecting them - but they do not know what they will receive until they pick them up. The bags are offered at a significantly lower price - at least 50 per cent cheaper - than what the items inside would cost normally.

As well as combating food waste, Too Good To Go says it also helps businesses recoup revenue which would otherwise be lost entirely when the items were thrown away.
