Galatasaray forward Noa Lang has narrowly escaped having his finger amputated despite sustaining a severe injury against Liverpool. Lang was stretchered off after crashing into the advertising hoardings in the dying moments of his side's 4-0Champions League thrashing at Anfield last Wednesday evening.

The forward required oxygen before being carried from the pitch and subsequently underwent surgery at Whiston Hospital before travelling back to Turkey. In an update, Galatasaray club doctor Yener Ince stated: "I want to talk about the condition of our two players who were injured in the Champions League Round of 16 match against Liverpool. Our player Noa Lang has suffered a serious injury to the first finger of his right hand.

"I want to clarify that there is no complete amputation; however, the injury is significant. Because this area needed urgent repair, he underwent a successful operation in Liverpool as quickly as possible, without being brought to Istanbul.

"Currently, there appear to be no problems, but the Galatasaray medical team is monitoring him. We are in close contact with the Dutch national team's medical staff, with whom we have had good communication for a long time.

"Lang will not play in the first match for the Dutch national team, and after further assessments, if conditions allow, we plan for him to return to the field in the second match. We aim for Noa Lang to return to the pitch as soon as possible with a special training program."

Galatasaray have lodged an official complaint with UEFA and are weighing up a legal case for compensation following Lang's horrific injury.

The club's general secretary Eray Yazgan told Turkish news outlet HTSport last week: "After the match, we lodged a complaint with UEFA representatives regarding the matter. They conducted their investigation.

"UEFA will evaluate the issue. We are consulting with lawyers. We will submit our compensation claim to UEFA. We will request that our grievances regarding salaries be addressed. If our request is not met, a lawsuit may be filed. Our priority is the health of our players."

After the match, Liverpool and UEFA officials were seen examining the advertising hoarding where the incident took place. Lang had been brought on as a half-time replacement for Victor Osimhen after the Nigerian striker had injured his wrist in an early challenge.

And in the same statement, Dr Ince added: "Another of our players, Victor Osimhen, underwent a successful operation today. His recovery will be monitored daily, and our medical team will do everything necessary to ensure his return to the pitch as soon as possible. Updates will be shared with the public by our club throughout the process."
