Udupi children's park falls into neglect amid maintenance concerns

Udupi: Two children’s parks located near the District Bal Bhavan and the Child Development Project Office in Udupi are reportedly in a state of neglect due to poor maintenance, raising safety concerns among parents and residents.

The parks, which attract several children every evening, have become overgrown with grass and shrubs, making them appear abandoned. Dry leaves scattered across the ground increase the risk of children slipping, while the presence of reptiles such as snakes and scorpions has added to parents’ worries.

Unsafe play equipment

Play structures inside the park are in a damaged condition. Swings are broken and touching the ground, while slides have rusted surfaces, posing a risk of injury to children. Despite these hazards, children continue to use the equipment.

The boundary walls, once painted with colourful images to attract children, have faded over time. The protective flooring meant to reduce injuries during falls has also worn out, increasing the risk of accidents.

Another park located near the same office is reported to be in an even worse condition, with thick vegetation making it difficult for children to enter or play safely.

Demand for repairs before summer holidays

With final examinations currently underway and summer holidays set to begin in April, residents have urged the authorities to repair the play equipment, clean the premises, and repaint the park to ensure a safe environment for children.

A local resident, Shalini, expressed concern over the lack of upkeep, stating that public funds are spent on creating such facilities, but poor maintenance has led to their deterioration.

Officials respond

Anuradha Hadimani, in-charge Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development in Udupi district, said a proposal has been submitted to the government for the repair of the Bal Bhavan park. She added that work will begin once approval is received. Plans are also being considered to develop a new, well-equipped park near the Child Development Project Office.
