As a horror enthusiast, it takes a considerable amount to frighten me, but a brand new series on Netflix left me so unnerved I could barely shift from my sofa.
After decades spent devouring the most terrifying films and TV programmes I could lay my hands on, I've become immune to the typical clichés and strategies often deployed in an attempt to horrify viewers. Whether it's predictable jump scares or excessive bloodshed, I'm no longer impacted.
Given my passion for all things frightening, I had nearly depleted Netflix's horror catalogue when Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen appeared. Launched on the platform today (March 26), the eight-episode series tracks engaged pair, Rachel and Nicky, in the week leading up to their nuptials, reports the Mirror.
Conceived by Haley Z. Boston and executive produced by the brains behind Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, it delves into the myriad of negative emotions that surface when preparing for a wedding and the unshakeable sensation that something dreadful will occur once you've made your lifelong pledge. As someone who only recently tied the knot myself, my interest was definitely piqued.

Full disclosure, I'd heard of the show's creator before and eagerly consumed every episode of Netflix series, Brand New Cherry Flavor, on which she served as a writer - so I was hopeful about what was to come. Reader, I wasn't let down.
The eerie, oppressive atmosphere the show generates practically seeps through the TV screen from the first episode and maintains a stranglehold throughout. The precise nature of the threat to our protagonists may initially be ambiguous, but there's a palpable sense of impending danger at every turn.
This alone makes you, the viewer, feel as though something very bad is indeed about to occur, as the title suggests. There are no predictable clichés here to offer familiarity, comfort or relief.
This disquieting ambiance had me glued to my sofa after binge-watching several episodes. I'd begun the show while it was still light outside, but night swiftly enveloped me, leaving me sitting in the darkness with full body shivers as the story unfolded.
The show lingered in my thoughts well after viewing too, making me hesitant to switch off my bedside lamp for fear that something very bad might happen to me as well.
The plot boasts enough layers to reduce an onion to tears, with minute details interconnecting to create an incredibly gratifying viewing experience. There are supernatural themes, serial killers, family tragedies and relationship dramas aplenty, with this web of narratives keeping you on your toes as you try to discern from which direction the terror will strike.
One aspect that particularly captivated me was discovering that the soundtrack was crafted by Colin Stetson. The composer and saxophonist possesses a distinctive, disturbing musical approach that complements the scenes playing out on screen perfectly, enhancing that sensation of mounting unease. If you've ever seen the film Hereditary, Stetson composed the score for that as well.
The less you understand about Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen's storyline beforehand the better, so there won't be spoilers from me. Just be warned, this show is scary - and I genuinely think it should have a viewer warning attached.
Netflix supplied me with seven of the episodes beforehand to compose this review but the grand finale I'll be experiencing with you tonight. Considering how much of a triumph episodes one to seven have been, I suspect the final one will be absolutely brilliant.
