Online Payment Rule Changed | If you are using UPI, online shopping or digital payments for daily activities, then there is an important news for you. From April 1, 2026, there will be a major change in digital payments. Till now we used to complete the transaction only by entering OTP while making online payments. But now it will not be so easy. Because RBI has implemented new rules to make transactions more secure. Accordingly, now only OTP will not be enough to make any online payment.
RBI has directed all banks and fintech companies to require at least two different verification methods for every transaction. So you have to identify yourself in two different ways. After entering the OTP you have to complete an additional step either PIN, Password or Biometric. This is what we call “two-factor authentication”. Online Payment Rule Changed

In fact, the types of online frauds have increased a lot these days. Many times the OTP reaches the wrong people due to phishing, SIM swap or hacking. So relying only on OTP is not secure. Sometimes OTPs arrive late. That’s why now RBI has decided to implement a stronger security system..so it might take a few seconds longer to make a payment. But this will keep your money safer, and the risk of fraud will be greatly reduced. Online Payment Rule Changed
RBI has clarified that if banks or platforms do not implement these rules and fraud occurs, the bank will be held responsible. In such cases, the customers can get compensation and the banks will not be able to escape the entire responsibility. This change is not limited to India. Similar security will be implemented for online transactions abroad. These rules will come into effect from October 2026, especially for card transactions.
