The impact player rule in the Indian Premier League continues to be a point of division for players as the 2026 season draws near. The rule, which was introduced in the 2023 season, allows teams to field one additional player for matches where they have the opportunity to make alterations in batting and bowling strength.
The rule was introduced with the aim of making the game more interesting while at the same time giving the freedom to play. However, top cricketers need more evidence to prove the effectiveness of the rule. There are a number of cricketers who have voiced their concerns about the new rule. Jos Buttler has become the latest prominent figure to voice his opinion about the new rule after sharing his point of view.
Growing Concerns Around The Rule
The impact player rule has already faced a number of criticisms from cricketers such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill also expressed his concerns about the impact player rule during a press conference that took place before the commencement of IPL 2026.
Gill said that the impact player rule removes the basic skills of the game, making it a different contest between two teams of 11 players each. The current situation where the two teams are performing as if there are 12 players each has created a notion that it reduces the overall importance of all-rounders and team combinations.
The topic was also discussed during the captains’ meeting before the season, where several leaders shared their doubts. The rule will continue to remain in effect until at least the 2027 season.

Jos Buttler Shares His View
Jos Buttler shared his agreement with most concerns which others raised during his opening statement for the upcoming season. According to him, the rule changes the fundamental structure of cricket because it now requires teams to play with 11 players on each side.
Buttler said:
“I think it does play around with the fundamentals of the game. Cricket's been 11 aside for so long, and being a bit of a traditionalist, I kind of like that, because it makes the value of all-rounders even more important. It makes the captains more important, being able to play the game with 11. With that being said, the impact rule has given more players more opportunities. It's thrown a different dynamic, a different talking point into the game, which you always need to add at different times.”
He added:
“So it's certainly done that, and it's been different. But I like the game as an 11-aside game, so that I would lean towards that.”
Buttler expressed his opinion that the rule has created fresh chances for players while he remained unsupportive of its implementation.
Tough T20 World Cup Campaign
Buttler comes into IPL 2026 after a difficult run in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Buttler's form during the semi-finals did not meet expectations despite England reaching that stage.
He scored only 87 runs in eight matches with 26 being his highest score. The performance provided fans with a different experience than they expected to see from him.
Buttler maintained transparency about his performance by stating that he dedicated all his energy to the competition.
Buttler further said:
“I tried hard to put a lot of effort into that World Cup and for a multitude of reasons probably it just didn't quite work out and actually having the capacity and discipline to just say that's okay, you know what, I tried hard at their game, that there is elements of things that I can't control and everyone else is trying to do well as well so it just didn't quite work out.”
Experience Helps Deal With Pressure
At 35, Buttler has spent many years playing international cricket and understands that form can go up and down. He said that players need to accept both good and bad phases.
he further said:
“Being a 35 year old player, 15 years of times where I've had good form, I've had bad form, I've had tournaments that went really well, I've had tournaments that didn't go to plan so you're always trying to reflect self-analysis but pinpointing one thing, I don't think there's actually, if there was that one secret then I think we'd all know it and we'd all score runs every time but I don't think that exists so it's just I've had a bit of space from the game which I've really enjoyed and I've reflected on. Whether I've scored runs or not, the challenge is the same thing for me to go to practice with energy and optimism, prepare well and then go to the game and take it from there.”
He concentrates on making efforts instead of expecting specific outcomes from his work.

Excited To Work With Matthew Hayden
Before IPL 2026, Gujarat Titans named former Australian opener Matthew Hayden as their new batting coach. Buttler expressed his enthusiasm to learn from him.
He explained how the IPL has supported his development as a cricketer throughout his cricketing career.
Buttler said:
“The IPL has been the biggest influence on my cricket career. Some of the lessons that I've learned during IPL season, some of the interactions I've had, some of the people I've had the pleasure of getting to meet and work with as coaches and players. And not just in the IPL; some of the conversations I've taken from the IPL have served me well when playing for England in Test cricket, T20 cricket, and 50-over cricket. So this had a huge impact.”
He added:
“Been here for three or four days and getting to talk to Matthew Hayden about batting, I wouldn't get that opportunity probably otherwise.”
Focus Shifts To IPL 2026
Buttler will attempt to regain his form and help Gujarat Titans perform well in this season. The team will start their campaign against Punjab Kings on March 31.
Players like Buttler will adapt to the impact player rule discussion while they play their best on the field.
