Mumbai Indians began their IPL 2026 campaign with a commanding six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, successfully chasing 221 and ending a long-standing opening-match jinx dating back to 2012.
Chasing a stiff target of 221, Mumbai Indians rode on blazing half-centuries from openers Rohit Sharma (78) and Ryan Rickelton (81), who stitched together a dominant 148-run partnership.
Captain Hardik Pandya (18 not out off 11) and Naman Dhir (5 not out off 2) finished the job as MI reached the target with six wickets in hand and five balls remaining. Tilak Varma (20 off 14) and Suryakumar Yadav (16 off 8) also chipped in.
The win marked Mumbai Indians’ first victory in an opening IPL match since 2012 and also registered the highest successful chase at the Wankhede Stadium and the fifth-highest in IPL history.

Shardul Thakur (3/39) was the standout bowler for KKR, while Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult kept things tight in the middle overs.
