In this era of Digital India, the entire system has undergone a complete transformation. You no longer need to make endless rounds of government offices or pay hefty fees to an agent. Whether you are launching a small startup from a spare room in your home or opening a new shop in the market, obtaining a Goods and Services Tax (GST) number is now entirely possible right from your smartphone or laptop. This number not only grants your business a legal and valid identity but also paves the way for taking your enterprise to new heights by enabling you to partner with major e-commerce platforms. Let’s understand how you can easily complete this entire process from the comfort of your home, without spending a single rupee.

Prepare Your File of Essential Documents
To ensure the registration process does not get stalled midway, the very first step is to gather all the necessary documents in one place. You must have your PAN card and an Aadhaar card that is linked to your current mobile number. Additionally, proof of your business address is crucial; for this, you can use an electricity bill or a rent agreement. Also, be sure to keep a cancelled cheque handy to verify your bank account details. These few documents will make your online application process incredibly fast and smooth.

Half Your Worries Vanish Once the TRN is Generated
Once your documents are ready, head directly to the official GST website. There, you will need to select the ‘New Registration’ option. On this page, you will be required to enter your PAN number, a current email ID, and your mobile number. As soon as you fill in this information, a One-Time Password (OTP) will be sent to both your phone and email address. Entering this OTP completes your verification, and you will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Receiving this TRN marks the completion of the first—and most critical—milestone in the process.

Keep These Points in Mind While Filling Out the Form
After logging back into the website using your TRN, you will need to provide accurate and specific details regarding your business across the various sections of the application form. This section requires you to provide your business name, the date of commencement of operations, the proprietor's personal details, and the complete business address. This is also where you are required to upload your proof of address.

If you are engaged in the sale of goods, it is mandatory to enter the HSN code. This specific code serves to accurately classify your product category. To avoid any complications during future tax filings, it is advisable to provide HSN codes for at least four to five of your primary products.

Following this, you are presented with a major convenience: 'Aadhaar Authentication.' If you select 'Yes' for this option, the entire documentation process is streamlined into a single click. A link is sent to your mobile phone, through which the e-KYC process is completed instantly. The most significant advantage of this method is that it eliminates the need for any physical verification by a government official thereafter.

Track Your Status Using the ARN
Once you have verified that all the information entered in the form is accurate, proceed to the 'Verification' section. There, click on 'Submit with EVC' (Electronic Verification Code). A final OTP will be sent to your mobile phone; upon entering this code, your application will be successfully submitted. Immediately thereafter, an ARN (Application Reference Number) will be displayed on your screen and sent to your phone. It is crucial to keep this number safe, as it will enable you to track the status of your registration in the future.

Obtaining a GST Number is Mandatory
Business owners should also note that if you intend to sell your goods online—specifically on an e-commerce platform—obtaining a GST number is absolutely mandatory, regardless of your earnings (turnover). Conversely, if you conduct business exclusively offline, you are exempt from this registration requirement provided your annual turnover does not exceed ₹40 lakhs. When applying, always provide the mobile number and email address that you use daily, as all future communications and updates from the government will be sent to those contact details.
