Kochi is increasingly finding itself on the global travel radar. As mentioned in a recent report by Booking.com, the coastal city has ranked among the top 10 most searched Indian destinations by global travellers for the first half of 2026, reflecting a growing interest in culturally rich and experience-led destinations.
The report highlights a 30% year-on-year rise in search interest, signalling Kochi’s expanding appeal across international travellers. This momentum is also visible on the ground. The city presents a distinct character, with clean, well-maintained streets, graffiti-lined walls, and neighbourhoods shaped by colonial influences. In areas such as Fort Kochi, this layered history coexists with a contemporary cultural energy.
Kochi’s evolving lifestyle offering is also contributing to its growing popularity. A noticeable café culture has taken root, with several spaces doubling up as art and exhibition venues, blending creativity with everyday experiences. This aligns with broader travel trends identified in the report, including a rising preference for alternative accommodations such as holiday homes, guest houses and bed and breakfasts.
P A Mohammed Riyas, Minister for Public Works and Tourism, Keralam, said, "It is encouraging to see Kochi emerge as one of the world’s Most Trending Destinations in 2026 by Booking.com. This recognition is a testament to the warmth of our local communities and the authentic experiences they offer. Through our focus on responsible tourism, we are creating journeys across Keralam that are deeply enriching and rooted in our local culture. Online travel platforms like Booking.com play a vital role in enhancing global visibility and connecting travellers to these community-led experiences. We remain committed to strengthening the city’s position as a premier, sustainable destination."
Food remains central to the city’s appeal. Traditional experiences such as sadya, along with staples like appams and dosas, continue to draw interest, while newer cafés add a more modern dimension to the dining landscape.
The report also points to increasing visibility across international markets, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as steady domestic interest.
Santosh Kumar, Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com said, “Kochi’s emergence as one of the top trending global destinations for 2026 reflects a shift in traveller intent towards destinations that offer a meaningful intersection of culture and modern accessibility. As
travellers move beyond traditional hubs, Kochi’s unique mix of maritime heritage and serene landscapes is captivating Indian and international travelers alike."
Despite this rising prominence, Kochi continues to retain a relatively unhurried and less crowded appeal, offering travellers a more relaxed and immersive experience compared to more saturated destinations.
