Man convinced neighbours 'hate' him after seeing how they mowed lawn

A man is convinced his neighbours "hate" him after seeing how they mowed the lawn at the front of their properties.

Keeping cordial relationships among neighbours is an important aim many people share - after all, who wants to come home to any potential drama, tension or animosity? But being polite and friendly isn't necessarily a surefire way to ensure positivity among those we live near, as one man has found out.

Though no obvious confrontation has taken place, airline pilot Jimmy Nicholson, from Australia, believes his neighbours are trying to tell him something.

In a video posted to Instagram, he filmed himself walking down his expansive driveway and told the screen: "Surely this is the most unAustralian act of 2026 - have a look at this."

He then flipped the camera to film his driveway at the front of his home, which is flanked by trees and grass on either side.

At the end of the driveway, where it meets the road, there's a patch of grass on either side. In the footage, a large tuft of unmowed grass could be seen at both sides.

Jimmy's next door neighbours had mowed right up to the edge of the property boundary, leaving a small section - presumably owned by Jimmy - deliberately untouched.

He added: "That is passive aggressive mowing at its finest."

In the caption accompanying his post, Jimmy, 35, penned: "Serious question - Do my neighbours hate me or is this fair play?"

In the comments section, people were divided. Some believed his neighbours were right and considered the length of Jimmy's grass to be too overgrown, likely irritating locals in the area.

One person said: "How about you mow your lawn and stop whinging".

Another said: "Read the room mate. Both neighbours tells you something".

A third theorised: "This is a result of you never mowing your yard and the neighbour getting sick of mowing yours as well. I would do the same thing, stop complaining [and] mow your yard."

A fourth commented: "That says more about you than them [to be honest]."

Another added: "It's completely Australian. They're sick of your untidied frontage which detracts from their places. Pull your weight and they'll recommence mowing the micro strip. Everyone needs to play their part to a neat street".

But others were unimpressed with Jimmy's neighbours' tactics. One Instagram user quipped:

"Mow it and leave a 10cm gap - they would hate that".

Another suggested: "Move to our street. Our neighbour mowed my whole front lawn today just because he was already doing his!"

Someone else shared: "Growing up my Dad made it my job to mow my neighbours lawn. The neighbour was a woman who worked night shift, and didn't have any garden tools. I would have mowed her lawn for 5+ years I reckon."

And another said: "My next door neighbour brings in my bins every week...best neighbour ever."
