NASA Launch Artemis II Mission: American space agency NASA’s Artemis II mission has been successfully launched. The huge SLS rocket took off into the sky at 3:54 am Indian time from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In this mission, four astronauts – Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen – will go to the Moon in the Orion capsule. This is the first time after ‘Apollo-17’ in 1972 (after about 54 years) that a human will cross the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and reach close to the Moon. The four passengers will revolve around the moon in the spacecraft and then return to Earth. This mission is of 10 days.

The Artemis-2 mission is the first manned mission to take humans to the Moon after 54 years. This is not just an ordinary flight, but is considered to be the beginning of a new era of human travel in space. For the first time since the Apollo-17 mission in 1972, humans are going near the Moon. In this mission, all four astronauts will revolve around the moon in the Orion spacecraft and then return safely to Earth.

Just an hour before take-off, some problems occurred in the ‘Launch Abort System’, due to which the launch was in danger. This is the same system through which NASA engineers can safely take out the astronauts in case of any malfunction. However, engineers resolved this problem rapidly. The countdown clock was then stopped at 10 minutes for a safety check. After this, ‘OK’ report came from the engineers who were responsible for different important systems of the rocket.

This mission involves a four-member crew…

  • Reed Wiseman (mission commander)
  • Victor Glover (pilot) – first black astronaut to reach the moon
  • Christina Koch (Mission Specialist) – first woman to go on a moon mission
  • Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist) – first Canadian astronaut to walk near the Moon

These four are now moving towards the moon in the Orion capsule.

what is the purpose

This mission is the first mission after the Apollo program in which humans will go to the moon. The purpose of this mission is to investigate new technologies and systems in space. After launch, all the systems like life support, navigation and communication will be tested by staying in Earth’s orbit for the first two days. After this, the spacecraft will move towards the Moon and while passing by it will conduct necessary tests, which will further improve the technical improvements and safety measures required for future long space missions.

Passengers will go about 6,400 km beyond the Moon

These astronauts will go about 6,400 km beyond the Moon and then return back to Earth. During this time they may become the most distant people in human history. During the trip, the astronauts will see the moon about the size of a basketball. They will take pictures of it and possibly see scenes that humans have never seen before. Additionally, they will also experience a partial solar eclipse. This mission will test many of the new systems of the Orion capsule, including facilities such as life support, water and toilets. However, the risk in the mission is also not less, because problems like hydrogen leaks have already surfaced in the rocket.

Why again towards the moon after 54 years?

After the Apollo program ended in 1972, America stopped going to the moon. At that time, due to reasons like politics and budget, the focus changed to Low Earth Orbit. However, now the situation has changed. Scientists have found signs of water, minerals and other important resources on the Moon, which are considered very important for the future space economy. For this reason the Artemis program was started.
