What does the ‘C’ in USB-C port really mean?

Have you ever wondered why the USB-C port on your smartphone or laptop is named? Many people think the ‘C’ stands for charging or cable, but it’s actually just the next letter in a series of USB connectors.

The history of USB technology is very old. First of all we got to see USB-A, which was a large and rectangular port, which can still be seen in many old pen drives. Next came USB-B, which was slightly square and often used in printers or older hard drives. Then over time many smaller versions like mini-B and micro-B came and went. Finally, in 2014 the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) introduced a new and improved connector called USB-C.

What does ‘C’ stand for in USB-C?

The ‘C’ in USB-C only refers to its design and shape, not its strength or features. USB-C is a port that is reversible, meaning there is no need to worry about plugging it in from the top or the bottom, it works in both directions. Nowadays, USB-C technology is being used in smartphones, laptops, tablets, chargers and almost every device. It’s small, simple and extremely powerful, but its true potential lies not in the letter ‘C’ but in the technology behind it.

USB-C ports: similar in appearance, different in function

If you think that every USB-C port provides fast speed and fast charging, then it is not true. USB-C only refers to the design of the port, not its actual capabilities. So, all USB-C ports may look the same, but they may have different capabilities. Some ports only offer the slower speeds of USB 2.0, while others can offer superfast speeds like USB 3.2, USB 4, or even Thunderbolt.

That’s why on many devices you see small labels, like PD (Power Delivery) or the lightning symbol. These labels tell what the true capabilities of that port are, such as use for fast charging, high-speed data transfer, or Display Port.
