New Delhi: Volkswagen India has shared a short teaser of the updated Taigun, just a few days before its official launch on April 9. The update looks like a regular mid-cycle refresh, which means the SUV will get some design changes and a few new features rather than a complete overhaul.

From what the teaser and earlier spy shots suggest, the changes are mostly on the outside, along with some expected updates to the gearbox and cabin features. The Taigun continues to be an important product for Volkswagen in the midsize SUV segment, so these updates aim to keep it competitive.

The teaser video shows a revised front section with a new bumper and a slightly updated grille. The headlights now appear to have a connected LED light bar, along with an illuminated Volkswagen logo at the centre. At the rear, the SUV is expected to get redesigned tail-lamps.

Earlier spy images had already hinted at a full-width LED light bar at the back. There is also likely to be new blacked-out ‘TAIGUN’ lettering on the tailgate, giving it a slightly fresher look compared to the current model.

Engine and gearbox updates

On the engine side, there are no major changes expected. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 115hp is likely to continue with a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, the current 6-speed automatic could be replaced with a new 8-speed unit.

The bigger 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with 150hp is also expected to remain unchanged. It should continue to be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, along with the manual option. There could also be slight improvements in fuel efficiency, similar to what has been seen on the Skoda Kushaq facelift.

Features and competition

Volkswagen has not yet shown the interior, but more details are expected closer to launch. If it follows the same approach as Skoda, the higher variants of the Taigun could get features like a panoramic sunroof and even a massaging function for the rear seats.

Other possible updates include changes to the infotainment system and driver display, and maybe better AC performance. Some basic features like a sunroof and rear wiper could also be offered from lower variants.

Once launched, the updated Taigun will continue to compete with rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara. A small price increase is expected compared to the current model.
