Body found near Chirk Castle after desperate search for boy, 17, launched

A body has been found in the search for a missing teenager launched two days ago. Emergency services rushed to Chirk Castle in Wrexham, North Wales after a 17-year-old entered a lake in the grounds of the castle.

Extensive searches were carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday by specialist search and rescue teams. After two days of extensive searches carried out by specialist search and rescue teams, police confirmed a body has sadly been found. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Formal identification has yet to take place, but the family of the 17-year-old have been informed.

Detective Chief Superintendent Sian Beck said: "My deepest thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones, who are being supported by specialist officers following this tragic incident.

"Formal identification is yet to take place, but his family have been informed. We kindly ask that the privacy of the family is respected at this difficult time."

The small lake lies beside the grounds of Chirk Castle, just off the drive leading to the castle's main entrance.

On Tuesday, crews accessed the water through National Trust Cymru property, a spokesperson confirmed.

They said: "We are aware of an ongoing incident on land neighbouring National Trust Cymru's estate at Chirk Castle.

"The emergency services are in attendance, with access provided via our estate. All enquiries should be directed to North Wales Police."

West Midlands Ambulance Service were in attendance, alongside crews from the Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS).

A WAS spokesperson said: "We were called at around 4pm yesterday (Tuesday) to an incident at Chirk Castle, Wrexham.

"We sent one emergency ambulance to the scene, where the crew was supported by one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and two operations managers.

"Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service colleagues also attended in a Wales Air Ambulance charity helicopter."
