OpenAI challenges Anthropic's Claude Max with $100 Pro plan for Codex

Synopsis

The new plan offers five times the Codex usage of the $20 Plus tier, making it better suited for longer, more intensive coding sessions. This development comes on the back of the AI major’s announcement that third-party integrations, including OpenClaw, will no longer be covered under standard subscription limits, and that usage through such tools will move to a separate pay-as-you-go model.

OpenAI has introduced a new $100 per month ChatGPT Pro tier aimed at heavier users of its artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant Codex.

“It is very nice to see Codex getting so much love. We are launching a $100 ChatGPT Pro tier by very popular demand,” company CEO Sam Altman announced on Thursday in a post on X.

The plan offers five times the Codex usage of the $20 Plus tier, making it better suited for longer, more intensive coding sessions, while Plus remains targeted at regular, everyday use. This means OpenAI now allows you to run the coding assistant Codex more frequently and for longer sessions before hitting limits.

With this addition, OpenAI now offers five personal subscription tiers, including Free, Go priced at $8, Plus at $20, and Pro 5x and 20x usage at $100 and $200 per month. The company also maintains education, business ($25 per user), and enterprise offerings for organisations.

With this, OpenAI’s pricing for Codex now closely mirrors how rival startup Anthropic structures access to Claude Code. Anthropic follows a tiered model starting with Free and a $20 Pro plan, similar to OpenAI’s Plus tier.

Above this, it offers Max plans priced at $100 and $200 per month, which provide 5x and 20x more usage than the Pro plan, respectively.

Alongside the new tier, OpenAI is rebalancing Codex usage within the Plus plan. The adjustment shifts usage toward more frequent sessions spread across the week rather than extended usage in a single day, effectively tightening daily limits while improving consistency.

The move comes amid a rapid adoption of AI coding tools. Codex has reached three million weekly users, with usage limits being scaled dynamically. OpenAI has also expanded Codex availability, including a broader rollout last October and a standalone Mac app launched in February.

The development coincides with changes at Anthropic. The company recently informed users that third-party integrations, including OpenClaw, will no longer be covered under standard subscription limits. Instead, usage through such tools will move to a separate pay-as-you-go model, with the policy set to extend to other third-party harnesses over time.

OpenAI launched GPT-5.3 Codex in February, shortly after Anthropic introduced its Opus 4.6 model powering Claude Code. In benchmark comparisons, GPT-5.3 Codex outperformed Claude Opus 4.6 on Terminal Bench 2.0, achieving a 77.3% success rate compared to 66.3%, indicating a higher task completion accuracy on that test.

In India, ChatGPT pricing starts with a free tier, followed by Go at ₹399 per month and Plus at ₹1,999 per month. The Pro plan starts at ₹10,699 per month, offering significantly higher usage limits, maximum Codex tasks, and access to more advanced models and capabilities
