Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a commanding batting display to outlast Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a high-scoring IPL encounter at Wankhede Stadium, where a staggering 462 runs were piled on across 40 overs.
The tone for the night was set early by Philip Salt, who launched into Mumbai’s bowling with fearless intent. His blistering 78 off just 36 balls turned the powerplay into a one-sided affair, as he attacked from the outset without any hint of caution. Rather than settling in, Salt dismantled the bowling attack, putting Mumbai immediately on the back foot and shifting the momentum firmly in RCB’s favour.
At the other end, Virat Kohli played the perfect supporting role. His composed 50 off 38 deliveries brought stability to the innings, ensuring that the aggression around him didn’t spiral into chaos. Kohli’s measured approach balanced the innings, anchoring the charge while Salt dominated proceedings.
The middle overs saw Rajat Patidar take over with a breathtaking cameo. Smashing 53 off just 20 balls, Patidar accelerated the innings at a crucial phase, turning a strong total into a daunting one. His clean hitting left the bowlers searching for answers as the scoreboard surged rapidly.
Late fireworks from Tim David, who remained unbeaten on 34 off 16 balls, provided the finishing touch, lifting RCB to a formidable 240/4 in 20 overs.
In response, Mumbai Indians began with promise. Rohit Sharma looked comfortable during his brief stay, scoring 19 off 13 balls before retiring hurt, a moment that disrupted the flow of the chase. His departure slightly dented Mumbai’s momentum at a critical juncture.
The responsibility then shifted to the middle order. Ryan Rickelton (37 off 22) and Suryakumar Yadav (33 off 22) kept the scoreboard ticking, while Hardik Pandya injected momentum with a brisk 40 off 22 balls.
However, regular wickets prevented Mumbai from building sustained partnerships. Suyash Sharma played a key role in breaking crucial stands, ensuring RCB stayed ahead in the contest.
The highlight of Mumbai’s chase came from Sherfane Rutherford, who delivered a stunning unbeaten 71 off 31 balls. His late assault, filled with towering sixes, briefly threatened to turn the game, but the target proved just out of reach.
Despite the late surge, Mumbai finished at 222/5, falling short by 18 runs in what turned out to be a fiercely contested run-fest.
In the end, the match was defined by RCB’s explosive start. Salt’s early aggression set the foundation, and while Mumbai fought back bravely, the initial damage proved decisive in shaping the outcome.
