Asha Bhosle Remembered by Bollywood Stars
Members of the Hindi film industry gathered to express their condolences to the family of the iconic singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on April 12 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Her death was attributed to multiple organ failure following a severe chest infection and extreme fatigue. Notable figures such as music composer AR Rahman, actors Ritesh Deshmukh, Ranveer Singh, Tabu, Asha Parekh, and Vivek Oberoi were present to pay their respects. Former actress and dancer Helen also attended, acknowledging that her success in Bollywood was significantly influenced by Asha's memorable songs. She fondly recalled how Asha Tai became her voice in the industry.
Helen's Heartfelt Tribute to Asha Bhosle
As Helen visited to bid farewell to Asha, she reflected on the impact Asha had on her career, particularly through her captivating cabaret songs. Expressing her sorrow over Asha's passing, she stated, "I was very sad to hear of her death. It's good that I am retired. Bhagwan unko sukhi rakhe [May God keep her happy]. May her beautiful soul rest in peace. Asha ji meri awaaz thi [Asha ji was my voice]."
Asha Bhosle and Helen collaborated on several hit tracks, including O Haseena Zulfonwali from Teesri Manzil (1966), Aa Jaane Jaan from Inteqam (1968), and Piya Tu Ab To Aaja from Caravan (1971). Asha had a deep admiration for Helen, once stating that her beauty would often distract her while singing. She humorously remarked, "If I were a man, I would have eloped with her."
Asha Bhosle's Final Farewell
Friends and admirers were invited to pay their last respects at Asha Tai's residence, Casa Grande, located in Lower Parel, Mumbai. Her funeral took place at Shivaji Park at 4 pm, where she was cremated with full state honors. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, attended the ceremony. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, stating, "Her soulful melodies and vibrant compositions carried timeless brilliance. I will always cherish the moments I shared with her."
In a similar vein, Asha's elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, was also honored with a state funeral at Shivaji Park in February 2022.
