The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said in an official statement on Tuesday that the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has so far facilitated the safe return of more than 2,262 Indian seafarers from different areas of the Gulf region, including 85 in the last 24 hours.
DG Shipping’s control room has handled 6,292 calls and more than 13,228 emails since its activation. These include 219 calls and 361 emails in the last 24 hours.
The ministry said that operations at ports across the country are going on normally and there is no congestion or blockage anywhere.
The statement said that the Ministry is continuously coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Embassies and maritime sector stakeholders to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers and the conduct of maritime activities continues uninterrupted.
At the same time, the Ministry of External Affairs also said that Indian Embassies and Missions in the Gulf region are in constant touch with the Indian community and are issuing necessary advisories for their safety.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar spoke to the foreign ministers of Kuwait and Israel and discussed the situation in the region and the security of Indians living there.
Apart from this, he also talked to his counterparts from Singapore and Australia about the situation in West Asia.
The Ministry is also in constant touch with the States and Union Territories, so that better exchange of information can be achieved and coordination remains strong.
The government said that ensuring the safety, security and welfare of Indian citizens is its priority. The Indian Embassy is helping people through a 24-hour helpline and is also in constant touch with the local governments.
