The secret to eliminating weeds from your patio could be lurking right in your kitchen cupboards.

As many of us look to spruce up our gardens ahead of the summer months, one of the tasks we'll need to tackle is getting rid of all the weeds that have sprouted up over the wet winter weather.

Weeds look unsightly in any part of the garden, but can be a particular problem when they appear between your patio tiles.

Thankfully, there's a straightforward way to get rid of patio weeds using a homemade weed killer that requires just three common household items - which you probably already have in your cupboards.

The tip was shared on the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips page on Facebook, after one woman asked: "I have numerous weeds coming through my block paving. I'm fed up of weeding them all to be just as bad the next week. Any ideas please?"

Commenters were quick to offer their advice, with many suggesting she should make a mixture of white vinegar, washing up liquid and salt to kill weeds and prevent them from ever growing back.

One person wrote: "I use white vinegar, washing-up liquid and salt. It works fab; I swear by it."

Another added: "Salt, vinegar, water and washing-up liquid mixed and sprayed on the area."

A third contributor offered further insight into preventing weeds from returning, suggesting: "One of the reasons weeds grow through block paving is because the silicone sand needs replacing. I only use distilled white vinegar, table salt and washing-up liquid mixed water to eradicate these problem weeds naturally.

"But once they are gone, brush in silicone sand right up to the level of the block paving; this stops wind-born weed seeds from entering to soil level through the blocks. You can get silicone sand from a good builders merchant."

Previously it was revealed how a gardening expert had recommended the very same mixture for tackling weeds.

Wendy Graham, founder of eco blog Moral Fibres, advised filling an empty spray bottle with one litre of white vinegar, three large tablespoons of salt, and three teaspoons of washing-up liquid.

This solution can then be applied directly onto weeds to eliminate them and prevent regrowth.

White vinegar is most affordable at Tesco, priced at just 35p.

Washing up liquid at Asda costs only 62p, while it's also available at Tesco for 62p. This means you could acquire everything required for this tip for as little as £2.72
