Bryson DeChambeau's LIV golf dispute after issue he 'didn't sign up for'

Bryson DeChambeau's long-term future with LIV Golf remains in doubt after he previously complained about a format change he "didn't sign up for". The 32-year-old has been the face of the rebel Saudi Arabia-backed circuit since its launch back in 2022.

But DeChambeau's LIV contract is set to expire after the 2026 season, meaning his future is up in the air beyond this summer. Recent speculation about the breakaway league's future has not helped alleviate those concerns, with suggestions thatLIV could lose its substantial backing from the Saudi Public Investment Fund [PIF] and no longer be able to pay its biggest stars the mammoth salaries it lured them away from the PGA Tour with. Both Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have already quit the struggling tour in recent months, which initially fuelled speculation that DeChambeau may follow suit. LIV fans and officials concerned about DeChambeau's potential departure were not comforted by the two-time major winner's comments in February, when he openly criticised a major format change LIV introduced this season and threw his future with the league further into doubt.

LIV Golf announced a dramatic shift at the end of last year, confirming that tournaments would move from 54 holes to 72 holes from 2026. It was seen as a strategy to earn recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking.

But it also marked the end of one of the league's most unique characteristics, which clearly frustrated the American. He told Today's Golfer: "We didn't sign up to play for 72. It's definitely changed away from what we had initially been told it was going to be.

"So there is some movement that we've all been, I would say, interested in, and going, 'Why that movement?' Because we were told it was going to be this. So that's definitely made us have some different thoughts about it."

DeChambeau, who has won five individual LIV Golf titles, sparked further speculation over his increasing tensions this week with LIV after losing his temper in Mexico City. At the sixth LIV event of the season, the American aimed a furious tirade about the condition of the course at Club de Golf Chapultepec after his ball landed in a patch of rough with barely any grass coverage.

"You got destroyed grass," he grumbled to onlookers in footage captured by Perisgolf. "Oh, this is rough? Definitely good to see," he then remarked with an ironic thumbs up as his demeanour dropped in sarcasm.

"You've got to have a rule here," he told an official after they arrived. "It's unbelievable, absolutely out of the question."

LIV Golf executives were not present at the Mexico City event, having reportedly been called to a meeting in New York over a "seismic" announcement amid fears that the league's Saudi Arabian funding could be withdrawn. Prior to Mexico, DeChambeau missed the cut at the Masters earlier this month after triple-bogeying the 18th hole on Friday.
