Kartik Tyagi gets his best T20 figures in IPL, bags three wickets in a over

Kolkata Knight Riders are looking for their first win on their home ground, Eden Gardens, after they successfully restricted Rajasthan Royals to 155 after being sent to field first on April 19. The credit goes to the fielders, even though they dropped a few catches. And bowlers deserve applause too. Varun Chakravarthy chips 3 wickets, along with Kartik Tyagi getting the same number. Sunil Narine took 2 scalps, as the Rajasthan Royals lost a total of 9 wickets.

Speaking of Karthik Tyagi, the UP-born fast bowler registered his best bowling figure in the Indian Premier League. He completed his quota of 4 overs, where he gave just 22 runs and took 3 wickets. Notably, all three wickets came in the 4th over, taking Ravindra Jadeja, Shimran Hetmyer, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Earlier, his best figure was when he played for the Rajasthan Royals. He took 2 wickets for 29 runs against the Punjab Kings in 2021. Well, his best T20 figure was in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League in 2023, when he took 6 wickets for 35, representing the Meerut Mavericks. In 2025, Kartik took 4 for 33 for the same team, which stands as his second-best.

The rise of Kartik Tyagi from the ashes

Kartik Tyagi started as a top face with the Rajasthan Royals but was later released in 2021. Since then, he has been struggling to manage a team and has had faith in him. He changed hands, even when unsold in 2025, before KKR signed him for an INR 30 lakh base price in the 2026 IPL mini auction.

Over 6 feet, the fast bowler often sustained criticisms for copying actions from bowlers like Brett Lee and Mark Wood. Tyagi even downplayed those claims, saying it was obvious for him to sustain himself in professional cricket despite injuries.

Notably, Tyagi had to manage his chronic shin splints. He underwent an intensive 19-month technical overhaul. Working with former India physio Ashish Kaushik in Bengaluru made technical changes like,

  • Shortened his run-up and saved time for the team
  • Adopt a mid-foot landing to reduce impact stress on his shins
  • corrected an “out-jump” in his stride that was affecting his consistency
  • tighten his non-bowling arm during the finish to maintain 140-150 kmph pace consistently, without overloading his body
  •

However, the season didn't start on a good note. Even though KKR has been consistently laying him, he conceded over 40s in almost all his matches before the one against RR. Him and Varun Chakravarthy did enough to restrict the guests to a chaseable score in overcast Kolkata.
